HAUX HEAVY

It’s been a couple of years since we last spoke with the Massachusetts photographer and musician Haux, when we interviewed him around the release of his EP, Something To Remember, and we certainly have missed Woodson Black in all this time. Lucky for us, Haux is back with new single ‘Heavy’ with a welcome announcement that he’ll be releasing his debut album in the near future. Reflecting on a childhood affected by cancer, substance abuse and a fatal overdose, his Violence in A Quiet Mind LP intends to be a deeply personal endeavour. Indeed ‘Heavy’ recalls the moment that Black discovered that his Aunt Alice had died from an accidental overdose after years of pain from a brain tumour. As he shares: “I remember I was walking back from a show in Boston and I got a phone call from my mum and I kind of just crumpled there on the sidewalk, tearing up. I wrote ‘Heavy’ about that time. I kind of stepped into her shoes for a little bit and wrote it from her perspective, or at least what I imagined it to be.” While Haux has struggled to speak about this due to depressive thoughts, he’s able to fuel that pain into the catharsis of songwriting. What we have is a beautifully portrayed piano song with ethereal electronica gently taking the listener through this significant event. The simplicity of that repeated “heavy is the heart”, puts a pin on the experience that many feel following the loss of a loved one. We hope it comes as a comfort. - Hannah Thacker
